Jugador canadiense de hockey sobre hielo, considerado el mejor de la historia de este deporte. Como centrodelantero y capitán de los Edmonton Oilers (1979–88), condujo a su equipo a ganar cuatro veces la Copa Stanley (el título de la National Hockey League [NHL]), y se convirtió en el primer jugador que promedió más de dos puntos (suma de asistencias y goles) por partido. Fue transferido sucesivamente a Los Angeles Kings (1988), los St. Louis Blues (1996) y los New York Rangers (1996). Al retirarse, en 1999, registraba 61 récords de la NHL. Tiene los récords de goles (894), de asistencias (1.963) y de puntos (2.857), así como los récords correspondientes en una sola temporada (92 goles, 163 asistencias y 255 puntos). Es el único jugador que ha encabezado la liga en cuanto a anotaciones durante siete años consecutivos (1980–87), y el único en haber sido nombrado el Jugador Más Valioso en ocho temporadas seguidas (1979–87).
